Why We Aerify: The Secret Behind Great Greens

If you have ever shown up to the course and spotted rows of small holes across the greens, you have seen aerification in action. It may look like a hassle at first, but it is one of the most important things a course can do to keep its putting surfaces healthy for the long haul.

What is aerification?
Aerification is the process of removing small cores of soil and turf from the greens using specialized equipment. Those holes are then often filled with sand. It is a routine part of course maintenance, much like a tune up for your car, and most courses do it once or twice a year.

Why does it matter?
Over time, foot traffic, mowers, and carts press the soil under the greens tighter and tighter. That compaction makes it harder for grass roots to get what they need. Aerification helps in a few key ways:

Better airflow. Roots need oxygen to grow, and loosening the soil lets air reach them.

Better drainage. Water soaks in instead of sitting on the surface, which means fewer soggy spots after a rain.

Stronger roots. With more room, air, water, and nutrients, roots grow deeper and the turf holds up better through heat, cold, and heavy play.

Less thatch. Aerification helps break down the layer of dead grass and roots that builds up under the surface, which keeps greens firm and rolling true.

Why fall?
Fall is an ideal time to aerify. Cooler temperatures are easier on the turf, and the grass still has enough growing season left to heal before winter. That sets the greens up for a strong start next spring.

What does it mean for your game?
For a short stretch after aerification, putts may bounce a bit and the greens may play slower. The good news is that recovery is quick, and the payoff is smoother, healthier greens for months to come. A little patience now means better rolls all season long.

Aerification at Sugar Loaf
Our crew will be aerifying greens at Sugar Loaf The Old Course the week of October 19. Nine holes will stay open during the work, so you can still get your round in. Golfers who want eighteen will simply play the open nine twice.

Fall golf is still in full swing, so book now and enjoy the season!
